TOP TEN TIPS FOR BED BUG PREVENTION

1.  Be Vigilant at Home – Bed bug populations grow extremely quickly and if an infestation is left unchecked for even a few months it can take hold of the property and spread very quickly.  It is important that home owners ensure that all areas at high risk from bed bugs are checked on a regular basis, particularly after overnight stays at hotels/motels or following trips on public transport. This is a top money saving tip – as treatments for long-entrenched bed bug populations can run into the $000s.

2.  The Traveller – We all enjoy our leisure time but unfortunately many of the things that we do during this time actually increases the risk of bringing home and spreading bed bugs. Shopping in stores, visiting loved ones’ homes, checking into hotels, going to the movies and public travel are some of the most common ways to transmit or contract bed bugs.
So anytime you do any of those activities, ensure you check your mattresses, sofas and luggage.

3.  Luggage – Use luggage liners when away on leisure or business trips to ensure bed bugs cannot hitch a ride back home with you at the end of the trip. If you suspect that your luggage is carrying more than just your clothes and belongings, keep your suitcase and bags isolated and away from your bedroom on your return home, and checked by professional immediately.

4.  Second Hand Furniture and Mattresses – There is nothing wrong with recycling, even when dealing with large items such as furniture and mattresses; it helps the environment and often helps save costs.  But be careful when taking second hand furniture in to your home or business, if possible check the location it has come from for bed bugs before accepting it and ensure that the items are thoroughly inspected by an appropriate expert before being placed in your home or business.

5.  On-going Room Maintenance – Bed bugs love to hide in small cracks and crevices – it’s where they usually go after having a blood meal (from a human!). Check the key areas of your home regularly for cracks and crevices and take action to seal them thoroughly, keeping the bed bugs out. Loose wallpaper should also be re-fixed as this can provide bed bugs with an excellent area to hide.

6.  Mattresses – When buying new mattresses, it is better to buy them without beading around the edge, giving the bed bugs as few places as possible to hide. If you don’t want to replace your mattress we recommend using a mattress encasement product such as the Secure Sleep range. These excellent inventions have secure zipping systems, no seams and bed bugs cannot penetrate them – they are very effective at preventing bed bugs and other insects from getting into your mattresses.

7.  Hygiene - Regular cleaning and vacuuming with a vacuum with a bag – so the contents can be disposed of safely – should be undertaken.

8.  Linen – Store linen in a bed bug unfriendly area – use a bed bug proof linen bag within or instead of your laundry bin.  Ensure used linen is stored away from the clean linen. Hot wash and dry linen that you suspect may contain bed bugs (don't forget the washing instructions though!)

9.  Call a Professional - There are a number of consumer products available to combat them and although some are extremely effective, a trained pest controller will be much better equipped to analyse the problem and recommend the correct course of action.

10.  Take References and Perform a Post Treatment Check – The recent growth in bed bug problems has lead to number companies trading on the back of this phenomenon - ensure you use a well respected company and take references before employing their services.
